I thought RSL was especially good in his scene with Cuddy. I don't know, something about that look he had at the end made me wonder if he possibly was serious and then laughed it off after Cuddy took it as him meddling on House's behalf. I'll have to rewatch, because I may have imagined it. Nope. That was definitely Wilson's "I'm-messing-with-you" voice and face. It came off exactly like all the other times he was messing around, such as the "I'm dating a hooker" thing a couple episodes ago. He didn't mean it; he was doing exactly as Cuddy suggested: wanting to take her on a date in an attempt to make House jealous, because he thought that making House jealous would be the best/quickest way to get him to admit/confront his feelings for Cuddy.

The whole mosquito thing was driving me crazy because I was sure that I had seen that before. And then I realized it was from Sports Night. I'm embarassed it took me so long to catch that given that I just went through a marathon viewing of Sports Night. Alas, Casey's battle with the fly in the studio ended much the same as House and the mosquito, which is to say, he and Dana--the old friend from college who he had sparks and chemistry with--never got together. And due to the muffled sound of my frakkin' television, I didn't even hear the Ric Ocasek line. But yeah, definitely a call out to the You Might Think music video.

^^^ The whole mosquito/itch plot didn't do a lot for me. Got the metaphor but I think the ep would have worked just as well w/o it. Also, am I the only one who is really starting to miss Clinic duty?

misere- 11-12-2008

The only other episode I can think of with dream sequences is Top Secret He had a dream in an episode during the Vogler arc in which he told Vogler he had cancer. I don't think he limped during that dream.

Boffle- 11-12-2008

When House came to see Cuddy, she was awake. At 3am, or at least still dark out. She's drinking tea. Visible through the front window. I'm wondering if Wilson warned her House might come over and she was ready for him. Though I don't think House thought of that. He has the strength to go to her, but, just as when he pushed Stacy away, I suspect, doesn't have the confidence to believe he could maker her happy either. On WIlson's couch, he says he's better off alone with bitterness and convictioni. It's a catch-22. If you believe that, you make it true. House realized that and made the effort to go see her again since he still had the same feelings toward her that led to the kiss, but this time he stopped to think about it and the moment died. He can see the answer but damned if he can muster the confidence to see it through. Great stuff.

NightOwl- 11-12-2008

No, Boffle, it wasn't 3 am when House went to see Cuddy. It was 3 am when House had the dream and went to Wilson's apartment. Wilson told him to go to Cuddy's house and ask her on a date, but he didn't. Instead, at 3 am he went to the patient's house to check up on him. By the time House went to Cuddy's house, it was a different night. Different clothes, and a lot of time had gone by in the episode. So when he went to Cuddy's house, it was probably just early- to mid-evening.

Boffle- 11-12-2008

Thanks, Night Owl, my bad. Now I remember, sorta. House woke up in his office the following morning. For some reason he didn't want to go home that night. The mosquito, the itch? eta: I think I dreamed this episode and woke up with it all jumbled. Sorry! :slinks away:

NightOwl- 11-12-2008

No, when he woke up in his office, it was early in the episode, but he hadn't slept there all night. He'd already run the initial DDX with the team, and he was taking a nap. Wilson showed up and woke him up and questioned him about whether he'd talked to Cuddy last night. That's when House told him about the kiss. You are all mixed up! You must go re-watch! After the dream, the 3 am visit to Wilson, and the 3 am visit to the patient, we don't see House go to bed or wake up. But yes, I agree he didn't want to be at home because he was tired of the pesky "killer mosquito" (as he referred to it) trying to get him!

For me, this one wasn't a Birthmarks or a Joy, but it was good. I liked a lot of things, but usually had a reservation or two to balance it out. The POTW ethical dilemma: I liked the POTW and that House was engaged in wanting to treat him. I liked that he and Cameron had different ideas how. I didn't like that Cameron's included waking up the patient just before surgery to tell him something any idiot would know would upset him enough to scuttle surgery. We know she's compassionate, but that was really silly. Then the next step is to fight House on taking the POTW to the hospital when he has his infarction. Why? Clearly, he's better off at the hospital, which she knew when she agreed to the surgery switch. Getting him there this time does not involve lying--his proxy said yes. He can be transported there in 5 minutes, so he will survive the infarction as House says. I was left thinking, "Why are you doing this, Cameron?" Her explanation that she always tries to revive the patient no matter what other considerations there are (and were being explained by House) seemed rather weak. Fight House when there's a point, Cameron, which we also saw her doing this episode. I liked that POTW not only stood for House, which was just a little on the heavy side for a metaphor, but also for Cameron. I think it actually worked better as a metaphor for her. She's been in a negative cycle with her emotional relationships for a long time, not having processed the pain of PDH enough to allow herself to commit to a relationship that is available. Finally allowing herself to acknowledge the fear and work past it was wonderful, especially since it was done without dragging in the crush, which was yet another deflection from processing PDH, into it. I didn't like that Cameron shows her issues by being mean to Chase--the snark about she's left but he was fired was mean and she never acknowledges when she fires these gratutitously nasty shots at Chase. But the end scenes with them were wonderful, and I'm rooting for them. I liked Kutner, Taub and Thirteen--each of them made their time count. I want to know more about Kutner--he's got a lot of wisdom hidden under the goofy exterior. I like the story about Taub and his wife very much--I think the little vignettes we get work. I was so happy she joined him on the couch. Another chance taken on another relationship. Thirteen was fine with her bits and it was time for her not to have the spotlight. I liked the House/Cuddy/Wilson stuff, too. I don't think there's any way we won't see a House in flight or deflecting if he's seriously considering a relationship. He's scared and he truly doesn't know if he should risk what he has to try for something he wants. Just to have him make that decision to run out the door to do something with Cuddy was the same kind of movement we saw him do much more decisively with Wilson when he reached out to mend the friendship. I think that points to House's feelings being based on more than friendship and feeling very dangerous because of it. He took a baby step this episode just in acknowledging the kiss did stir up feelings and desires. All in all, a solid ep, but a trifle on the anvillicious side. And I'd like to see House more featured in the episodes, regardless of who is the featured other player. I suspect HL must have negotiated spending less time on set, but I don't think it's going to work taking some focus off House. I was interested in getting an update on Chase and Cameron, but I don't want a similar set up next week. I don't want to have to think, "Oh good, there's House!" on House.

cindylouwho- 11-12-2008

I think that even if House is seriously considering dating Cuddy, she isn't really considering dating him. She's thought about it, as Wilson was able to draw that out of her, and come to the conclusion that it would be a disaster. I think that if they had sex as friends with benefits, fine, but I think they both know right now, unless House isn't working for her, it wouldn't work...too many ethical dilemmas there. Why Wilson is trying to force this issue, still confuses me. I'd rather see him rebuilding his friendship w/ House than pushing House off on someone else. But of course this is my opinion. Maybe if I shipped Huddy I'd see it a different way?

jair- 11-12-2008

I don't think Cuddy is quite as pulled together about what she wants with House as she presents, but she's obviously very cognizant of the possible issues. I don't think that necessarily means she isn't tempted to try something more, should that be an option between them. She's rationalizing, House is avoiding--there's still emotions there they need to acknowledge. But I don't think we're supposed to take anything for granted in terms of what happens.

hughsblues- 11-12-2008

I don't know...I don't ship House with anyone really...but there's something about the concern he and Cuddy have for each other and the sometimes totally warped ways they show it that really draws me in. I can't explain it...but one thing that I could rewind and keep watching over again is just that short little exchange when Cuddy asks House if he's ok cause of the bloody bandaid on his hand. The way she asked him was just totally endearing. I have no idea why...it worked for me though. I like to see him knowing what he wants and but not thinking he should go for it. It's so House.

Maryl- 11-12-2008

I hope that at some point in the future they revisit the issue of Cuddy losing the baby. It was forgotten about 15 minutes into the episode. I liked the POTW and the parallels to House and Cameron. I didn't think it was insulting to the audience. On the other hand, Cuddy's speech about why a relationship with House wouldn't work, and Wilson's spelling out that the mosquito represented Cuddy were totally unnecessary. Thanks to the posters who explained the references to Rich Ocasek and the Battle of Ypres. Does anyone know why House had a propane tank in his dream?

NightOwl- 11-12-2008

Does anyone know why House had a propane tank in his dream? That was a propane mosquito trap. They've been on the market for a few years now. The propane releases carbon dioxide, and it's mixed with some other chemical, which attracts mosquitoes. They can't resist it, and when they follow the scent and get close to the trap, they get sucked into it by a vacuum, where they are trapped and die. They are for OUTDOOR USE ONLY. It caused an explosion in his dream because he was indoors with it, he accidentally broke the valve on the trap, and then accidentally turned on the burner on his gas stove. I think "explosion" is a metaphor about him and Cuddy... in the good way.

jonne- 11-12-2008

I'm quite surprised they didn't use the explosion in the promo. They could have made it into yet another marvelous "very special episode". Am I right in thinking we have never seen House riding the bike without his helmet before? So was this deliberate to show his vulnerability?
