I do feel bad for House at the end, but I don't think it was meant like that.
Yeah, I thought again about it and considering the fact that House survived, it would have been the happiest solution. House gets on the bus alone, gets injured but also gets fixed, everyone lives happily ever after. Well, sort of. This is House we're talking about.
But at the same time, I winced, considering that he went from "I should have been on the bus... you should have been on the bus alone." I took that to mean: "It should have been me who died. No, wait. You alone should have suffered. Gotta go, bye."

Thanks Poeia.
I really appreciate that.

I'm hoping we'll see a parallel between this PoTW and Wilson. In the end, she was willing to go back to her boss after her boss couldn't make anything else work, knowing that her relationship with this woman would never be one of equal footing, but also knowing that she can make a difference with this person, and that this person is trying to make it as much of a two-way street as she can. This is the essence of House and Wilson. This is what I want to see.

Wilson would never have been on the bus instead of Amber. Part of the tragedy of her going to pick House up was that if she had been selfish and just passed the message on, Wilson would have gone to the bar and House would have gotten into Wilson's car for a ride home. No bus.
radiosweetheart- 09-16-2008
The PoTW was OK. I was kind of hoping her diagnosis had something to do with the fact that she didn't feel that she needed ambition, but who wants to watch a depressed 37 year old who just had an abortion? That's not good TV, I guess.
Cuddy was meh. Which is my usual take on Cuddy for the last 2 or so years. Cameron didn't annoy me-good use of her character. Chase rules. Kutner rules, too. Taub has possibilities. 13 should not have more scenes than Cameron. Cameron usually gets about 1 scene an episode, right? That's enough. Foreman isn't as smart as he thinks he is. But we knew that.
As for House and Wilson...WAH!!!! Oh man, that end scene just was too much. Damn. Wilson-get back there and hug that sad guy with the cane! You don't need a life! You need HOUSE!!!

 That needs to be a T-shirt, or a bumper sticker or something.

I actually thought it was one of the best season openers they've had, personally, but as I've said, I didn't care for "Alone," so take that as you will. (It was certainly better than "Acceptance" or "Meaning," and while there was a little too much 13, at least she has a reason -- Huntington's -- to self-personalize everything, compared to Cameron with Cindy Lou Who, which bugged me far, far, far, more.)
In terms of Cuddy, I actually felt for her quite a bit here. I could see her feeling for both men, and it seemed like her heart was aching right along with House's at the realization of what Wilson's withdrawal meant to House -- along with her putting into words House's biggest fear of what Wilson would say, not realizing that the truth of what Wilson did say would be even worse. Interesting also how she got them both into couples counseling by withholding vital needs from both. I also appreciate the fact that at least she tried to get them talking, even if the attempt failed.

Wow - reading these lines, after seeing them spoken - House's crumbling face is clear in my mind, the slightly slumping shoulders. He thought and hoped that they were "good" again, and man, did he get a heavy earful as Wilson says what he really thinks.
I like that Wilson learned from Amber about taking care of himself. That's one way her life made a difference (thinking about the conversation between 13 and POTW where 13 says she wants to make a difference, and the POTW says she's helped her by inspiring her to look for her own career). Will Wilson, like POTW, settle back into the role he used to have?
peggy06- 09-16-2008
I liked the episode. It had a good balance of PotW and PPTH storylines, drama and snark. There was nothing cartoonish. House got the dx (though how? It went right over my head.) I disliked that they had him abandoning the patient because of Wilson, though. Give me back the old House who would do the job even while strung out or trying to detox. Obviously, this is a developing storyline, so there was a good bit of setup. I hope it pays off in a good way. Wilson is far from being my favorite character, and when I think of Meaning and a few other eps, he has a nerve saying House isn't good for him. But even I was tearing up in their last scene together.
Anyway, glad to see the show is back!

In some ways, I was happy to see the writers put POTW back into her old job. How many times have we seen the "patient almost dies and has a life-changing experience" plot? Here, they threw us a twist that is probably more in keeping with reality. It was depressing but it was real. And it fit better with the rest of the story. JMHO.

Oh, and there was way too much 13. Way too much. I think this is the first time in history that a character had more screentime than House did. That's a shame.
I think it's weird that Cameron said that after her husband died, she got a new job and moved away. She was in college when she met and married him, wasn't she? Maybe she graduated college right before he died, but even then... didn't she go to med school at that point rather than get a job?
Did TPTB forget that Cameron married in college?
I caught that, too, and wondered if the Continuity Fairy was on a break. Although it is possible that PDH died shortly after Cameron graduated from college (would have to be shortly, since she was only 21 when he died) and was working, and she started med school a year or three later. Although JM is only 29, the character was written as early 30s. What is it, 7 years to complete med school, internship and residency? Assuming she was, say, 32 when she started her fellowship with House, she could conceivably have started her medical training at 24 or 25 -- so the "moved and got another job" scenario is plausible.
I did like her tonight, but then again, I'm a CamSymp. I appreciate all the comments here from folks who aren't but liked her in this ep. The lighting in the scene with Wilson, combined with her hairdo, made her look positively angelic, the way she did in the "hold the baby" scene in "Maternity." Whether you like the character or not, you have to admit JM is gorgeous.
And that final scene did bring the tears. Poor House.
LightMyCandle- 09-16-2008
Stupid DVD recorder misse the first 20 minutes. I saw it but now I can't rewatch it should I feel the desire too.

I've always thought she was a very beautiful woman. I'm not a fan of the blond hair but it looked a little better in her scene with Wilson, a little bit curled, just like (as you said) it was in Maternity.

I did not see her aching for Wilson, no way. Her "Go to hell"? Who (other than possibly House) says that to a grieving friend? Let the man be snippy with you for a damn second, if you care about him at all.
But I don't think she sees him as a friend, just as an employee and a House wrangler.
RSL does the almost-crying thing better than anybody in the business. WOW. He had me tearing up right along with him.
But the saddest line in the episode, to me? "Maybe I can help." When has House ever said that? When has he reached out so explicitly to offer comfort to Wilson? So sad for him that it's too little, too late. :(

4 years of med school
3 years of residency in internal medicine
2 years (at least) for her fellowship in immunology
That's 9 years of post-college education and training she had to do before she could have even begun to work for House. Which means she had to be 30 or 31 in season 1. Unless she was some kind of prodigy who graduated high school at 13. Which I doubt, because we would have learned that by now. And since she married in college, I can't imagine she was underage at the time.
I think they screwed it up. They should have had her say, "I graduated college and moved away for med school." But since they can't keep the main character's timeline straight, I can't expect them to keep a side character's timeline straight.

Agreed, that was out of line.

That he does.

That was the saddest part for me too. House willing to try and help and being very harshly shut down. Not that I blame Wilson, but still, seeing House reach out like that broke my heart.
